AQUARTICLES WEBSITE: A MESSAGE
TO ALL
Prior to his passing my brother Howard Norfolk asked
that I maintain the Aquarticles website for as long as possible and keep it as an
important reference point for aquarists throughout the world. To this point in time I have
kept the website as it was and the webmaster Theo has graciously added articles to the
site when time allows.
It is without question that Howard did not want
advertising to appear on Aquarticles. He wanted to keep the site as "pure" as
possible; however there are certain expenses that add up in maintaining the site, that
advertising revenue would offset. Having thought about this and keeping Howard's wishes in
mind I thought a bit outside of the box. What if we allowed advertising on the site, but
set up a company "Aquarticles" that would administer the revenues? My idea is
that if there are, and I believe that there certainly will be, revenues that exceed the
costs of maintaining the site, then the company will contribute the excess funds to
deserving charities and organizations in the aquarist world. These monies would help fund
research on disease prevention and other worthwhile causes or perhaps fund a tank in an
important aquarium for the benefit and education of those visiting. Once or twice a year a
chosen group of experts will look at applications for funding and decide on those who were
the most deserving. The only stipulation that I will put on the recipients is that they
acknowledge the contribution from Aquarticles in the form of a plaque where possible or at
the very least an acknowledgment in any papers or findings that were generated and to give
permission, if it were applicable, to publish the findings, articles or research on the
site.
The ultimate goal is to create the Howard Norfolk
Foundation that will allow the website and associated grants to be administered by a board
of governors and would allow the foundation to continue in perpetuity. If all goes as
envisioned, the website would not only grow and prosper, but Howard would be remembered
around the world and a great deal of work by both Howard and his associates would increase
in significance.
If there are any comments, suggestions or questions
that you might have please fell free to email me at Aquarticles@gmail.com.
Thank you for your time and enjoy the site!
Jim Norfolk

material. Thus, I present A Behind the
Scenes Tour of the Rotterdam Aquarium in the Netherlands.
February 2008: 1075 articles now available

*important
announcements: First, I have
been informed by the mail box company I use in Canada for Aquarticles that I must use a "new" address for all correspondance:
Aquarticles
4131 Bonavista Crescent Burlington
Ontario
L7M 4J3
Canada
I will now have to update the
mailing address on all the articles on the site by hand. This is not the first time this
has happened, but I sure hope it is the last!
My second announcement is
that I am about to relocate from Europe to South East Asia. The next six months promise to
be a time of great upheaval in my life. I will try to publish newly submitted work during
my travels, but this may not always be possible. I thank you for your understanding and
patience. One benefit for Aquarticles from my travels is that I plan to write about the
"aquarium scene" in S.E. Asia, so stay tuned!

- Nathan D'Addio of
Australia introduces us to a local aquarium store owner who proves that a small space is
no constraint to providing quality fish. MEET AN AQUARIUM SERIES:
AUSTRALIA Part 1 : Steve Baines and the Itty Bitty Aquarium Store. Nathan
tells me this is the first of a series of articles he is working on to introduce
Aquarticles' readers to the aquarists of Australia. I think this is a wonderful project
and will be of interest to aquarists around the world! Thanks Nathan!
- Dr.Adrian Lawler provides both public policy suggestions and advice for
everyone in how people can go about Controlling Aquatic
Litter.
- Few articles on Aquarticles have provoked as much reader interest as those by Dr.Lawler
on Fish TB, otherwise known as Mycobacterium
marinum. Many aquarists have
asked Dr.Lawler for help in learning more about this disease, which is capable of crossing
over to humans. From these enquiries Dr. Lawler has compiled the article Fish TB
(Mycobacterium marinum) - FAQ
- In the tradition of Howard Norfolk, I wish to publish articles about
interesting people around the world who keep tropical fish as a hobby. As one of the
founders of www.freshwaterstingray.nl, some
of you will already be familiar with Frank Zijlmans. I am priveleged to introduce you to
his partner Nico in MEET AN
AQUARIST SERIES : THE NETHERLANDS Part 1 : Nico and Frank.

Boasting the largest single aquarium tank in Northern Europe (at over 1 million gallons),
and a pair of rarely seen sunfish (Mola mola), the Nordsømuseet is well worth a
visit.
- Besides aquariums, my other hobbies include cycling and travelling. Thus, in the
tradition set by Howard Norfolk, whereby he chronicled his interesting travels (which did
not always pertain directly to fish), I offer up the following two-part article: My 2007 PBP (Paris-Brest-Paris) Cycling Adventure
and PBP 2007 -

read The Busines of Asian
Arowana in Singapore, based on an interview with Mr.Kan.
- Dr. Adrian Lawler receives
frequent requests for information about "Fish Tuberculosis" or "Fish
TB" that can cross over to infect humans. He has provided Aquarticles with a previously published journal article entitled Human Mycobacterium
marinum Aronson Infections. The case studies Dr.Lawler recounts should give any aquarist pause for
thought.
- David Marshall
happened upon a hybrid Synondontous sp. catfish in his local pet store. What

July 2007: 1040 articles now available
- Article 1040 marks a minor
milestone in that it is the 100th article I have posted or helped to post on Aquarticles. It is fitting then, that it be rather special - and it is. Thanks to the
generosity of a Canadian named Michael "Arapaimag", (who would
prefer his last name not be publicized - for reasons that may be inferred shortly), and
the cooperation of the owner of the large aquarium forum Monster Fish Keepers, I am proud to
bring you a MASSIVE article entitled Building a Monster
50,000 Gallon Aquarium. The article is a collation of forum posts, on-line essays, and
photos produced by Michael over the past several years. I hope you find the article
inspiring!
- I've posted an article I recently wrote entitled Raising Frogs in Denmark.

by Nathan D'Addio of Australia. Along with his article Nathan also sent
some personal observations about how Aquarticles helps him as an aquarist:
"Aquarticles.com has been an
extremely useful source of information. There is enough content
control to prevent the site from becoming a Wikipedia,
where you dont know if you can trust the
content of articles. There is also an incredible range of
articles, from people all over the world.
It is very easy for me to find what I am looking for,
whether it is removing algae or breeding the
Pearl Gourami."
I thank you Nathan for
choosing to join the global cast of authors whose hard work and altrusim have made Aquarticles what it is today.

in a professional, yet easy to understand manner. On behalf of the Aquarticles' community
Adrian, "Thank you!"

- David Cooper provides a survey of a commercial aquaculture project in Breeding the New
Zealand Short Fin Eel, Anguilla australis When I asked David whether it was a typing error in his article
that eels sell for up to $10,000 per kilogram, he replied "In actual fact, since
that was written, we have an authenticated case of a kilo of glass eels selling in Tokyo
for US $15,000. This was authenticated by David Doubilet of National Geographic Magazine
who was down here earlier this year doing an article on eels." Well, talk about
expensive sushi! As Dr.Adrian Lawler
pointed out in another email, however, given that glass eels are postlarval (being sold
for stocking aquaculture facilities), there could be anywhere from 5,000-10,000 eels per
kilo, translating to a price of about $1-3 per eel. So maybe that "sushi"
is not that expensive after all!
